Local Author Presentation: Richard Graeme: "Whispers of the Underworld"

Tuesday, July 17, 2018

In his latest book, local author Richard Graeme sheds light on the history of Bisbee’s Red-Light District which operated as an “unpleasant necessity” from 1892 to 1917. In its heyday, the district, which spread out from O.K. Street, to Brewery Gulch and Main Street, was home to one hundred girls and over twenty houses. The District was active until 1917 when a military camp was formed during World War I and established near the small town of Lowell, just south of Bisbee. The Federal Government’s regulations would not permit such a camp to be within three miles of a red-light area. The lawmakers decided to shut the district down until the war was over, but it never opened for business after that. On Tuesday, July 17, Richard will present his book, Whispers of the Underworld, which he wrote using court documents, coroner’s reports and hospital records to paint a clearer picture of who these women really were.
